A stabbing at a downtown halfway house has left one woman dead.
The attack happened around 10:30am Wednesday at the Dara Residence on Homewood Avenue, near Carlton and Sherbourne streets.
When paramedics arrived, they found the 51-year-old victim with multiple stab wounds and no vital signs. She was transported to St. Michael’s Hospital but could not be revived.
“Why would anybody do that to [her]? Why would anybody – she’s such a nice lady. Why would anybody do that,” one man said outside the home.
The victim owned and operated three townhouses with her husband, but did not live there. Dara Residence provided meals and activities as well as a place to live for people with mental illnesses.
Police arrested a 46-year-old man at the scene. There’s no word yet on charges.
“I’m not sure what the motivation behind it was or how long it took,” Det. John Biggerstaff said.
Tenants praised the victim, with one man saying she brought him soup when he was sick with the flu.
The woman’s name is not being released pending notification of next-of-kin. Her death marks Toronto’s fifth homicide of 2010.
