Drivers should mark June 30 in their organizer — that’s the day before the price of gas is set to spike by eight per cent thanks to the harmonized sales tax.
The provincial government admitted motorists will take a hit when the HST takes effect July 1 and lineups to fill up will likely be long in the last days of June.
“The five per cent GST is going to the 13 per cent HST, so that means the price of gasoline will go up eight per cent on July the 1st. That’s why so many people will be filling up on June 30th,” Ontario Revenue Minister Jim Wilkinson said.
When the HST takes effect provincial and federal taxes will account for more than 40 per cent of the price of gas.
And there was small comfort at the pumps Wednesday. Across the GTA the cost of filling up sits around the buck-a-litre mark.
