Pickering Coyote Kills Dog

It’s been just over a month since four coyotes were spotted near the Rouge River ravine in Pickering.

Now, one of them has snatched and killed a small dog.

A woman was walking two Pomeranians around 10pm on March 1. She says that a coyote approached from behind and grabbed the smaller dog (pictured above) of the two dogs, then ran off into the woods.

The second dog was unharmed and the dog owner was not physically injured.

According to Durham Regional Police, family members later returned to the area and found the coyote on Woodview Avenue.

However, they could not locate their pet.

Safety Tips

  • If you encounter a coyote do not turn your back or run away, rather remain calm and back away slowly.
  • If walking at dawn or dusk, bring a whistle or personal device to frighten any approaching animal.
  • Always walk your pets on a leash and keep your cats inside.
  • Never feed a wild animal.
  • Never take matters into your own hands.
