Thousands rally for International Women’s Day

TORONTO, Ont. – Thousands of people took to the streets of downtown Toronto, Saturday afternoon, in celebration of International Women’s Day.

The march began on Bloor Street West at St. George and ended at Ryerson University around 2:30 pm.

People raised their voices in support of good jobs with pensions for women.

Many people wore red cloths on their head as a symbol of empowerment.

One woman taking part in the march told 680News that the event is about taking control.

“Women’s rights are only won through our united struggles and we have to take up the quest of gaining control of the decision making. So here we are. A force, a movement.”

Although the crowd was made up overwhelmingly of females, one man, who travelled all the way from Sudbury, told 680News he was marching to show his support for women’s rights.

“A lot of us men recognize women as our partners in life, not something to be used and abused.  Partners doesn’t mean you treat them like dogs, it means you treat them as equals.”

A number of people were also holding signs highlighting women’s oppression in other countries, reminding the public that women’s rights need to be addressed universally.
