Power Usage drops during Earth Hour

TORONTO, Ont. – Demand for power in Toronto fell by 10 per cent during Earth Hour yesterday, compared to 15.1 per cent last year.
The Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator said the decline may have been due to the cooler weather.
“With temperatures that were ten degrees colder, there’s going to be some offset with savings because people are heating their houses,” said Terry Young of the provincial operator.
Meanwhile, Stacey McCarthy, Atlantic Organizer with the World Wildlife Fund, said the event is not about the drop in electricity during that one hour.
“It’s more about the symbolic action. It’s more about the long-term effects of people making changes in their everyday lives,” McCarthy said.
In Ontario, 560 megawatts less energy was used, which is enough to power a city the size of Brampton.
