Teen Still In Critical Condition Following Rugby Game

A teenage boy remains in critical condition following a rugby game.

Wesley Jorisch, 16, was tackled on the field of Pope John Paul II Catholic Secondary School on Thursday.

“He was carrying the ball and as part of the rugby activity and part of the game, there was a tackle,” said Mary Jo Deighan, spokesperson for the Toronto District School Board.

“He fell on the ball and then remained unconscious.”

Two medics were on hand at the time and performed CPR on Jorisch. He was rushed to hospital, but has not regained consciousness.

Jorisch is a grade 10 student at Marshall McLuhan Catholic Secondary School and a member of the junior boys’ rugby team. Counselors were on hand Friday to talk to his classmates.

“He’s a good guy. It’s really sad this had to happen. Freak accident. Small chance it would happen. Too bad it had to happen to him,” said student Peter Burke.

But others questioned the safety of the game.

“I got a serious injury – bad. It’s a very dangerous sport,” said another student, Brian Quintero.

“At the same time that’s kind of how the game goes. A lot of unexpected things happen. It makes you think twice about it.”
