Power Outage Hits Downtown Core Wed. Afternoon

About 20,000 people were affected by a large power outage in the downtown core Wednesday afternoon.

A reported problem with an underground cable fault caused the lights to go out just after 11:30am. The majority of the area bounded by Bay Street to the west, Jarvis in the east, Shuter to the north and Lake Shore Boulevard to the south had power restored by 1:30pm.

Not all buildings in that area were hit. St. Michael’s Hospital was running on emergency power, while the Toronto Stock Exchange appeared unaffected.

Firefighters were called out to a number of buildings to assist people trapped in elevators. Traffic lights were also out, clogging some thoroughfares.

This comes a day after another significant outage in midtown.
