Theatre Shows Suspended During G20

The G20 summit is causing havoc for commuters, residents and taxpayers in Toronto.
It’s the largest security event in Canadian history and even musical theatre isn’t safe.
Mirvish Productions announced on Friday Rock of Ages and Mamma Mia! will not run during the summit.
“It wasn’t an easy decision to make,” producer David Mirvish said in a statement.
“The theatrical adage we have always lived by is ‘the show must go on.’ But in this instance – an unprecedented instance for us as we’ve always performed our shows – we have concluded that our audiences are best served by the shows not going on.
Mamma Mia! will close a week earlier than planned, ending its Toronto run on June 20.
Rock of Ages will have its last performance on June 20 but will resume on June 28.
All those holding tickets to the performances the week of June 21 to 27 will be contacted and offered an exchange to other performances, Mirvish promised.
Meanwhile, summit planners in Ottawa are preparing for “worst-case” scenarios. The apparently remote possibility that this month’s gatherings of G8 and G20 leaders could be the target of a terror attack or other catastrophe – or, in security-speak, a “low-probability, high-impact incident -” is the cause for the extra preparations.
