Some Downtown Shops Hurting After G20 Summit

The G20 summit is over and most of the protesters gone, but a handful of downtown shops are still struggling in their wake.

Majid Hussain’s memorabilia store, Sports Centre, lost three days of business and his windows were damaged in Saturday’s violence on Yonge Street.

“I don’t know if they will be coming back here on Yonge Street. People are still scared trust me,” he said.

Hussain’s sales are 20 to 30 per cent of what they were before the summit and according to the Downtown Yonge Business Improvement Area, he’s not alone.

“We’ve heard things anywhere between $15,000 and $30,000 per business. Not every individual business but some have told us this,” said Joe MacDonald.

But even at the height of the protests, people wanted to shop at Sunrise Records, which has returned to normal.

“They were still scrambling to get in after the Black Bloc was gone – and we were closed,” said manager Stan Michna.

The Yonge Street strip, a designated tourist area, will be open on Canada Day.
