Teen Dies After Being Pulled From Scarborough Pool

A 14-year-old has died after he and another boy, also 14, were pulled from a Scarborough swimming pool without vital signs.

Shortly after 3pm Wednesday, the victims were found at the bottom of a pool in an apartment building on Thunder Grove, near McCowan Rd. and Finch Ave. E.

They had been swimming with their friend who lives in the building, but that boy was not hurt.

When police arrived, one officer dove in fully clothed to help rescue the boys.

“She just dove right in the pool fully equipped. She’s obviously a little shaken up. I’ll be recommending her for a citation,” said Sgt. Philip Lee.

Paramedics worked to resuscitate the boys during an emergency run to the Scarborough Hospital on Birchmount Rd., but one was pronounced dead. The other was transported to Sick Kids Hospital by ambulance and is in serious condition.

Under Ontario law, 14-year-olds are allowed to be in a pool without supervision. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by someone 16 years of age or older.

“If 14-year-old boys drown in an apartment pool, it’s probably because they don’t know how to swim,” said Barbara Byers of the Lifesaving Society.

“If you’re in an apartment pool, or a backyard pool and you’re a non-swimmer, you might have a feeling of confidence in the shallow end because you can touch the bottom. But as soon as you take that step in the drop-off area, it’s devastating.”

The victims had just graduated from Henry Kelsey Senior Public School on Huntingwood Dr.

Police from 42 Division are investigating.
