Two spectacular crashes snarled traffic on Highway 427 for hours on Friday.
Just after 11am, a tractor-trailer rolled on its side in the northbound collector lanes near Burnhamthrope.
About a half-hour later, a second tractor trailer crashed 50 metres away, in the southbound lanes. The truck was travelling in the collectors, when it lost control and mounted the guard rail.
In both cases, the drivers said other motorists cut them off. It’s not clear if the rainy weather and slick roads also contributed to the collisions.
There was serious damage in both cases – including a large diesel fuel spill – but the drivers were not injured.
“It creates an environmental hazard, a fire hazard, so precautions have to be taken,” said OPP Cst. Graham Williamson.
Police shut down the collector lanes in both directions and the express lanes slowed to a crawl for several hours.
So far, police have not laid any charges.
