Is Where You Live Making You Overweight?

Are you living in a “food desert?”

A recent U.S study states that women who live close to a grocery store are more likely to eat healthy.

But not all communities have access to good food. In many areas, mostly lower income, there simply isn’t a good market or grocery store available and people rely on unhealthy food from convenience stores.

An area like Toronto’s Danforth neighbourhood is brimming with grocery stores. There are more than 40 in a two kilometer stretch.

But one of Toronto’s “food deserts” is Lawrence Park. It’s currently being revitalized to include a grocery store. Area residents are concerned it will be considerable more expensive than the food they’re used to.

The U.S has launched a “healthy corner store” initiative, where owners are asked to stock a few fruits and vegetables. It’s going well.
