Environment Canada confirms tornadoes touched down in Amherstburg

AMHERSTBURG, Ont. – Environment Canada confirmed that the band of severe storms that created damage in the Amherstburg, Ont., area Friday night was caused by an F0 tornado – the weakest tornado on a scale of F0 to F5.

Wind blew through the area at up to 110 kilometres an hour, knocking down several trees and power lines in the county south of Windsor.

Tornadoes were spotted by residents, Amherstburg firefighter Rick Laframboise said. He also said trees were twisted, pulled out of the ground from their trunk and pieces of buildings were blown across the road.

There were no reported injuries. Hydro One said power outages caused by the storm were restored Saturday night.

The path of damage is approximately a kilometre long and roughly 10-metres wide.
