TIFF Unveils A-List Lineup

This year’s 35th annual Toronto International Film Festival will be a star-studded event, with some of Hollywood’s biggest names set to debut films.
Organizers of TIFF unveiled 20 per cent of their line-up Tuesday.
It will feature 25 world premieres, 15 gala premieres and 35 special presentations. It runs from September 9-19.
Robert DeNiro, Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman, Ryan Reynolds, Helen Mirren and Nicole Kidman are just some of the names with movies in the festival.
One of the highlights is a new movie from legendary actor/director Robert Redford, “The Conspirator.” Starring Robin Wright and James McAvoy, it follows the story of a woman accused of helping her son in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
It’s an A-list pairing for the flick “Beginners.” Canadian actor and Hollywood heavyweight Christopher Plummer teams up with Ewan McGregor to tell the story of a father and son whose relationship is strained when the elderly father comes out as gay.
Another film with a Canadian connection making its North American premiere is “Barney’s Version.” The movie is based on the book written by Canadian author Mordecai Richler and stars Paul Giamatti, Rosamund Pike, Minnie Driver, Rachelle Lefevre, Hoffman and Scott Speedman.
“Rabbit Hole,” stars Nicole Kidman and Aaron Eckhart as a couple dealing with the loss of their son. Former “Friend” David Schwimmer directs Clive Owen and Catherine Keener in “Trust” as parents devastated about their daughter’s new online friend.
Conspicuously absent from the line-up was Jodie Foster’s movie, “The Beaver.” The film stars the beleaguered Mel Gibson. TIFF had been considering it previous to Gibson’s recent very public scandal.
TIFF’s 35th year certainly has an international feel. Movies from Chad, Denmark, France, Hong Kong, India, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom will be screened.
To celebrate the anniversary, TIFF will be offering free screenings of classic flicks at the new Bell Lightbox building as part of the “TIFF For Free” program. Details on that will be announced shortly.
In 2009, TIFF drew in an estimated 500, 000 moviegoers. It’s considered to be one of the world’s most prestigious festivals.
