The first Monday in August is Simcoe Day in Ontario and this year the civic holiday falls on August 2.
Simcoe Day honours John Graves Simcoe, the first Lieutenant Governor of Ontario (then known as Upper Canada). While the long weekend is celebrated nearly everywhere in Canada, it goes by many other names.
In British Columbia, it’s British Columbia Day. In Saskatchewan, it’s Saskatchewan Day, and in Alberta, it’s Heritage Day. Manitoba, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI and the Northwest Territories all take a long weekend in August – but it’s business as usual in the Yukon, Nunavut, Quebec and Newfoundland.
