Costs For Proposed Four-Stacked Arena Skyrocket

It’s not just rinks that are piling up — the costs for a proposed stacked four-pad waterfront arena have climbed to a staggering $88 million, about $17 million more than was originally projected.

Technical and environmental requirements have been cited as the source of the extra costs.

The all-glass structure would be built on Commissioners St. and Don Roadway.

The innovative design may cost more than the original proposal, which had all four rinks on ground level, but it remains the preferred option of design experts, waterfront officials and many councillors and mayoral candidates.

One person who isn’t impressed is mayoral front-runner Rob Ford, who said the city isn’t in fiscal shape to build the impressive structure.

Proponents of the new design note that by stacking the rinks they are freeing up land for other, potentially profitable, waterfront developments.

The design must still be approved by council.
