Loblaw Workers Could Strike Next Month

The union representing 30,000 Loblaw store workers in Ontario says its members will strike if it can’t reach a deal with the company by early next month.

United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) Locals 1977, 1000A, 175 and 633 have been bargaining with Loblaw Companies Ltd. since April. But they say there are still major issues that need resolving.

Both sides were hoping for a settlement during talks last week, but when that didn’t happen, the union set a strike deadline of 12:01am on October 8th.

The union and management will meet again the week of September 27th to October 2nd.

The province has assigned a mediator to help with negotiations.

Affected stores include Loblaws, Zehrs, Real Canadian Superstores, Great Food and Fortinos.
