A walk for injured troops comes through Toronto

TORONTO, Ont. – A walk giving the public a chance to aid injured Canadian soldiers will continue Sunday morning in Toronto.

This portion of the nine-day walk began around 6 a.m., at the Police Association building on Yorkland, off of Sheppard.

Participants will proceed along Sheppard to Weston Road, then to Finch. The walk will wrap up around 11 a.m. at the Gord and Irene Risk Community Centre.

The walk for veterans started last Monday when participants left CFB Trenton. They are hoping to reach CFB Borden by Tuesday, which is a 200 kilometre trek.

Angela Benedict, the executive director of the Military Healing Centre, told 680News this is the first walk organized for injured soldiers of this magnitude.

“We have all kinds of events to support our troops, and that is really, really important. But this is different in the fact that it is base-to-base, from CFB Trenton to CFB Borden. But it is different also because we are trying to raise awareness to the general population about combat stress.”

This walk will also help raise money for The Soldier On Fund – a fund providing financial grants to injured or ill CF personnel.
