Retail sales dip

If you’re holding off on a new plasma TV or dining room set, you’re not alone.

New retail numbers suggest we’re still suffering a recession hangover.

Shopping has been suffering for the last few months and it seems to have hit the furniture and electronic stores the hardest.

Sales were down almost 10 per cent from last year.

John Williams with JC Williams Group believes it’s because we’re not sure of what to expect.

“They don’t see strong figures coming out about the future. At the same time, they don’t see bad figures so they’re hesitant,” Williams said.

And he expects the wait-and-see behaviour to continue into the holidays, saying Canadians don’t seem confident that they can afford the big-screen TV.

What we could buy are new fall outfits.

“(The purchase of) lower-price things such as fashion apparel have shown a nice little increase. People don’t mind that, we’ve had great weather so they’re out buying a new wardrobe,” Williams added.
