Ford Proposes Moving Marathons Off Streets & Into Parks

Rob Ford appears to be attempting to tap into motorists’ frustration by floating the idea of moving marathons off city streets and into parks. He also says the city has to do a better job of informing people about large events that shut down streets.

The Toronto Waterfront Marathon took over several major routes on Sunday, including Lake Shore Boulevard, University Avenue, Queen, Front and Parliament Streets and Eastern Avenue. Ford admitted he didn’t know the event was taking place until he started hearing from constituents.

The Toronto Marathon takes place on Oct. 17. The Ride for Heart shuts down the Don Valley Parkway every June.

Ford told the Toronto Sun he’d like to see events like the Toronto Waterfront Marathon moved off of streets. The mayoral hopeful doesn’t appear to have a specific plan as yet, but said if he’s elected he’ll study “alternatives.”

Ford mentioned High Park, Downsview Park and the green space along the Humber River as possible alternatives.

Meanwhile, fellow candidate George Smitherman released his economic plan Monday, which includes trimming down city staff through attrition.

His Budget Blueprint includes a reduction to the Vehicle Registration Tax; selling under-used city land and a 50:50 deal with the province for TTC operational funding.

He’s also promising the TTC will be free for seniors between 10am and 2pm on weekdays.

And Rocco Rossi unveiled his downtown bike lanes plan Monday, as well. He’s promising physically-separated bike lanes on Sherbourne, Richmond, Harbord and St. George.
