Hundreds of firefighters, family and loved ones gathered at Queen’s Park Sunday afternoon as the names of 31 fallen comrades were added to the province’s firefighter memorial.
The names added are firefighters who either died directly in the line of duty, or from an occupational disease.
Dedicated in 2005, the memorial now contains 531 names. The province goes back and conducts thorough research before adding each name.
“When I look over these 531 names I am grateful for the countless lives that they have touched and helped during their careers. It fills me with pride to share this profession with these brave members. They were great firefighters doing their job,” said Fred LeBlanc President of the Ontario Professional Firefighters Association.
Sunday’s dedication also marks the start of fire prevention week. The 2010 theme is smoke alarms, addressing the need for working detectors and a proper escape plan in every household.
