Much to the chagrin of political veteran Joe Pantalone, and ambitious newcomer Rocco Rossi, Toronto’s mayoral election has for quite some time been perceived as a two-man race between Rob Ford and George Smitherman. That perception was further cemented Wednesday when the results of a new Ipsos-Reid poll were revealed.
The poll, conducted on behalf of Newstalk 1010, has Smitherman suddenly taking a narrow lead, at 31%, while former runaway front-runner Ford was right behind at 30%. Pantalone garnered just 11%, with Rossi facing a likely insurmountable hurdle at just 4%.
Rossi was the first candidate to publicly comment on the latest results.
“I am obviously disappointed with the results of the latest poll. However, with a quarter of Torontonians still undecided, it is clear that many voters are still unhappy with the two front runners. A number of additional polls are scheduled to report later this week, beginning tomorrow, so the situation remains fluid. As the candidate with the best fiscal plan and the most practical ideas for transit expansion, I intend to continue to talking about the issues that matter most to Torontonians.”
With just 10 days to go, the latest results will only help fuel what should be a frenzied final drive for the two leading candidates as they try to persuade the 25% of undecided voters to tilt the scales in their favour.
Among those who have committed to go out and vote, Smitherman’s lead is even stronger at 38% compared to Ford’s 32%.
The poll was conducted between October 8-10.
