Toronto Police Services board votes to dismantle Special Constable program

TORONTO, Ont. – The Toronto Police Services board voted to dismantle the TTC Special Constable program, Thursday evening.

CityNews reported the program is expected to come to an end on February 1, 2011.

The decision to end the program resulted from the lack of oversight over the officers’ conduct.

Special Constables are not governed by the Police Services Act, the Special Investigations Unit, or the office of the Independent Police Review Director.

The program has been in place for the past 13 years.
