VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Former Energy Minister Bill Bennett has now been thrown out of the BC Liberal caucus after getting expelled from the cabinet earlier this week.
Caucus Chair Ron Cantelon says it was a unanimous decision that came after a long caucus meeting. “The principles that were most spoken about were the principles of mutual trust and respect, and clearly Bill Bennett’s comments went over the line.”
Bennett lashed out at the outgoing Premier Gordon Campbell after getting ousted from the cabinet earlier this week, saying Campbell was the one who decided to fire him. Days earlier, Bennett said Premier Gordon Campbell ought to step down sooner rather than later.
Cantelon says it was a thoughtful discussion, but a tough call. Mike de Jong, Shirley Bond, Kevin Krueger and Kevin Falcon all stuck to the same line, insisting the decision to boot Bennett was right.
Although he said he supported Bennett when he walked in this morning, Kash Heed now says he agrees with the decision to boot him. Health Minister Kevin Falcon says Bennett’s tirade against Premier Gordon Campbell left them no options. Transportation minister Shirley Bond agrees, “I think we have a beginning that says we’re ready to roll out. We’re ready to send candidates out shortly and start talking about the future of British Columbia again.”
Cantelon says there is no change in the timeline for Premier Campbell to leave.
