Energy use up 20 per cent in Metro Vancouver

VANCOUVER (NEWS1130) – Metro Vancouver energy use is up 20 per cent compared to last week thanks to this cold weather.  BC Hydro says the system’s capacity hasn’t been reached yet.

The highest peak ever recorded in 2006 was near 10,100 megawatts and we are nearing that now.  But Power Smart Engineer Gary Hamer says there are systems in place to help meet the load.  “We experience our highest peak days during the winter and typically in December and January.  This is a lot earlier than what we would typically experience.”

Hamer recommends you save energy and stay warm by heating the areas of the home you use the most.  “Wear a sweater inside the house, turning down the thermostat a little bit.  You can also make sure you’ve got storm windows in.”

He adds you make also make your own with shrink wrap and a hairdryer over a single glazed window.
