WikiLeaks Founder Julian Assange Granted Bail

A British court granted bail to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange on Tuesday, though he might not be released if Swedish authorities launch an appeal.

Swedish lawyer, Gemma Lindfield, said she would likely do so within the two-hour deadline imposed by the judge.

Assange, 39, surrendered to Scotland Yard last week after Swedish police issued a warrant for his arrest in a sex-crimes investigation. He denies the charges and will fight extradition.

The bail conditions are strict. Assange must wear an electronic tag, live at a registered address, report to police every evening and observe two four-hour curfews a day.

Several of his supporters put up the equivalent of the C$380,000 required for his release.

The Australian – whose website has published hundreds of thousands of classified documents and angered many world leaders – was accused of sexual misconduct by two Swedish WikiLeaks volunteers this year.

He is due in court again on Jan. 11.
