TTC streetcar collides with bus at River and Dundas

TORONTO, Ont. – 17 people were taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries after a TTC streetcar collided with a bus at the intersection of River Street and Dundas Thursday afternoon.
The impact of the crash, which occurred around 3 p.m., tossed around the estimated 30 riders on the streetcar, while the Greyhound bus was not carrying any passengers.
“The bus had gone through the intersection, and the streetcar made an attempt to stop to avoid colliding with the bus, did what he could,” said Toronto Police Sgt. Christopher Tracey.
“Unfortunately, the streetcar ended up colliding with the rear of the coach bus, […] and the streetcar came off its tracks and ended up stopping […] northeast and the bus is facing northwest.”
Both drivers suffered the most serious trauma, one with an injury to the shoulder, and the other with a hip injury. However, both are still considered to be non-life threatening.
Five ambulances transported the injured to hospital, while four children were taken to Sick Kids for a check-up.
“I was in my house,” said Marie, an area resident, who “suddenly [heard] a crash, and we came outside. We were going to the back door and we were like “‘ah! Streetcar and the bus hit!'”
“It sounded like when metals collide together,” she told 680News.
The vehicles remained in the intersection late into Thursday evening, tangled in a V formation. The streetcar was knocked off the tracks, while the bus became intertwined with a pole.
The intersection has been closed to traffic. There is no word on charges being laid, as investigators remain unsure of what led to the collision.
