Loblaws said they will continue to charge for plastic bags even if Toronto Mayor Rob Ford convinces city council to scrap the nickel fee.
Loblaws donates proceeds from the fee to the World Wildlife Fund Canada.
The environmental group told The Toronto Star a billion fewer plastic bags have been handed out across Canada since the fee was introduced in Toronto in 2009.
While some councillors insisted they didn’t have the right to impose the fee in the first place, environmentalists argued it has led to less litter and reduced the amount of bags sent to landfills.
