Toronto to hike fees for false alarms, recreation programs

TORONTO, Ont. – Torontonians can expect a series of price hikes and new user fees to balance out the books at City Hall.

Staff said the hikes will total $23 million, on top of other proposed hikes to garbage and water rates.

The Toronto Star reported that the increase will apply to false fire alarms, raising the price from $350 to $410, while a 3 per cent hike will apply to aquatic, skating, arts and crafts and day camps, as well as several other recreation programs.

In addition, the cost of a marriage licence is going up to $140. For those looking to tie the knot at City Hall or another civic centre, the price will go up to $100.

However, all the changes still require a rubber stamp from council next month.
