TORONTO, Ont. – The father of slain Toronto police officer Sgt. Ryan Russell thanked fellow officers and civilians for their wealth of support in the family’s time of need.
Glenn Russell issued a statement on behalf of the family at 52 Division, Friday, where his son was based. Ryan’s wife, mother and sister were also present.
Cards with heartfelt messages and flowers cover a section of the foyer of 52 Division, along with a toy Toronto police car stuffed with teddy bears. It was against this backdrop that the former detective thanked Toronto.
“You stood with us shoulder-to-shoulder every step of the way, we were able to lean upon you when we faltered,” Glenn said.
He also acknowledged the thousands of police, fire and emergency personnel who marched during Tuesday’s funeral.
“It is with a great sense of pride that we extend our gratitude for being there for us,” Glenn said.
Sgt. Russell died on January 12 after being struck by a stolen snowplow.
