One Dead In Forest Hill Fire

An elderly man is dead and several others are in hospital following an early morning fire at a Forest Hill apartment building.

The blaze broke out around 6:30am on a seventh floor unit of 10 Shallmar Boulevard. This was the home of an elderly couple.

Crews were called to the unit after a brief 911 call from within the unit. The caller quickly dropped the phone to escape the flames.

When responders arrived, they found the 85-year-old male victim, already deceased. His wife, 74, was suffering from severe smoke inhalation and transported to hospital.

“We have six people being treated for smoke inhalation,” said Toronto Deputy Fire Chief Ron Jenkins. “The fire is going to be under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal’s office.”

It took 13 trucks about half an hour to extinguish the bulk of the fire.

The building was evacuated with some residents taking shelter on TTC buses.
