CP freight train derailment near Orillia

A major clean up and investigation is underway following a freight train derailment northeast of Orillia, Wednesday.

Two CP freight trains collided and one derailed near Upper Big Chute Road in Severn Township.

The collision happened at around 3:20 a.m.

CP Rail spokesperson Mike LoVecchio told 680News 21 cars jumped the tracks.

“A southbound freight train was passing a northbound freight train near a very small community called Buckskin, Ont. One of the trains derailed and in the process of derailing made contact with a stationary train,” he said.

One of the derailed cars was carrying propane, leading to a minor evacuation of a few houses; however, nothing is leaking.

This derailment does not impact passenger rail traffic.

LoVecchio said the line is limited to freight trains. He said CP will use a bypass track while the clean up continues.
