SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz earned $150,000 for his successful weekend title defence against Evangelista (Cyborg) Santos, according to the California State Athletic Commission.
Santos, who lost via second-round submission Saturday at San Jose’s HP Pavilion, earned $20,000.
The commission figures did not tell the whole story since promoters often do not detail other bonuses or contract clauses. They also do not take into account taxes or other deductions.
Middleweight champion Ronaldo (Jacare) Souza made $85,000, including a $15,000 bonus, for his third-round submission win over (Ruthless) Robbie Lawler ($65,000) in the co-main event.
Lawler was suspended for 180 days pending medical clearance for a possible left foot fracture.
Roger Gracie earned $75,000 for his submission win over Trevor Prangley ($30,000).
Former NFL star running back Herschel Walker made $5,000 for his first round KO of Scott Carson ($5,000).
The commission said the Strikeforce card drew a crowd of 9,059 for a gate of $533,214.50.
