Mubarak Unveils New Government

Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak introduced the new members of his government Monday, but the move did nothing to quell the groundswell of support for his ouster.

Opposition groups are working to organize a so-called million man march and protesters continue to ignore midday curfews imposed by authorities.

The unveiling of Mubarak’s new cabinet was met by protesters’ scoffs as it contains several regime stalwarts. Nobel laureate Mohamed ElBaradei has emerged as a likely leader of a possible coalition of opposition groups.

The outlawed Muslim Brotherhood has signaled it wouldn’t be opposed to having ElBaradei speak on behalf of all protesters.

Thousands of protesters continued to gather in Cairo’s central Tahrir Square Monday and opposition groups are working to organize a massive demonstration Tuesday. Meanwhile, Mubarak announced his interior minister, Habib el-Adly, who led the security forces accused of brutality, has been replaced.

Fourteen members of Mubarak’s new 29-seat cabinet are fresh faces.

There was also chaos at Cairo’s international airport Monday as foreigners scrambled to get out of the country. Ottawa has sent chartered flights to the country to bring home the estimated 6,500 Canadians there.
