Criminal pardons continue to decline after 2010’s changes to laws

OTTAWA, Ont. – Canadian criminal pardons have plummeted since drastic changes to the law were put in place last summer.

Newly released figures show less than 800 federal pardons were issued up to the end of January 2011.

More than 6,600 applications have been reviewed since the new rules went into effect last July.

Advocates for criminal rehabilitation said the changes are throwing up barriers to more than three million Canadians with old criminal records.
