Transit Strike Averted In York Region

Transit riders in York Region can breathe easy: a strike has been averted.

Members of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 113 and Veolia Transportation reached a tentative agreement on Sunday night.

The details of the agreement have not yet been released, but the main issues were wages and sick days. Now, members of the union will have to vote on the proposed agreement.

“Our membership is very frustrated with this employer. The employees that work for VIVA currently recognize that this employer is not interested in their employees’ well-being, or in the public’s well-being for that matter,” ATU 113 president Bob Kinnear said on Sunday.

“They are more interested in profitability and that is going to continue to be a challenge whether or not we get this agreement ratified,” Kinnear added.

Veolia Transportation was awarded the five-year, $140 million contract through a competitive bidding process in August 2010.
