Toronto mayor Rob Ford is looking towards the private sector to help fulfill his campaign promise of more subway development.
Ford hopes a public-private partnership would help finance the extension of the Sheppard line with more subway tracks, rather than light rail.
That would leave enough money for an underground light rail line along Eglinton, possibly extending to the Scarborough Town Centre.
The proposal, which was made during a meeting on Tuesday, hasn’t been approved by Metrolinx, the Ontario-funded transit agency.
President of Metrolinx, Bruce McCuaig, says there’s $8.15 billion available from the province for four light rail projects in Toronto.
The latest proposal is being seen as an attempt to compromise between the provincially funded light rail plan and mayor Ford’s firm commitment to building subways.
