Kovalev headed back to Pens in Sens trade

Alex Kovalev is headed back to Pittsburgh.

The Penguins have acquired the forward from the Ottawa Senators after the Russian waived his no-trade clause. In exchange, the Senators get a seventh-round pick.

Kovalev, who turned 38 Thursday, played for Pittsburgh from 1998-99 until the 2002-03 season, when he was re-acquired by the New York Rangers, who drafted him 15th overall in 2001. He became one of four Russians first to have their names engraved on the Stanley Cup as part of New York’s 1994 championship-winning team.

Kovalev signed with the Senators in the off-season as a free agent after five seasons with the Montreal Canadiens. In his first season with Ottawa he had 18 goals and 31 assists for 49 points in 77 games. This season he had 27 points (14 G, 13 A) in 54 games with a minus-9.
