There’s an app for that: CityNews goes mobile

Bringing fresh meaning to our tagline “Everywhere,” we’re excited to announce the launch of the CityNews app for iPad and iPhone as well as a mobile site for BlackBerry and Android smartphones that put the latest the latest in local news, weather, sports, and traffic in the palm of your hands.

The iPad and iPhone app is available for free from Apple’s iTunes App Store (search “CityNews”), and online by clicking here. You can also view a mobile version of CityNews at http://m.citynews.ca.

The new app brings together stories from our website, videos from our broadcasts, real-time traffic updates from cameras on the highways, and up-to-the-second weather forecasts that can be customized to show data from one of our numerous weather stations across the GTA.

Since all of our local stories are geo-coded, you can also find out what’s happening right now in your neighbourhood by zooming into a map of the region. For example, pinching-to-zoom on Queen’s Quay will show all stories in that area, as well as traffic cameras along the Gardiner and our weather station at the Island Airport. The map functionality is only available on the iPhone and iPad.

You’ve told us mobile video is important and we’ve responded by creating a robust video section that will allow you to watch our latest news and weather webcasts, clips from our news broadcasts, and web-original content whether you’re on the train, at soccer practice, or at the pub.

And, not only will you get the latest news from us, you can easily share your news with us too. In the “Your Stories” section of the app, you can upload videos, photos, and news tips in just a few touch-screen taps. You can then view your content on the app – as well as that from your fellow CityNews viewers.

“How Torontonians are interacting with local news is evolving,” Andrea Gagliardi, general manager and director of TV Web at Rogers Digital Media, said in a statement.

“The CityNews app delivers meaningful and interactive access to local news stories while on the go and as they are developing, including breaking news, user generated content, videos, sharing and maps,” Gagliardi added.

The CityNews app is the third app Citytv has launched in less than a year. Last May, Citytv launched the Shorts in the City app for iPhone and iPad, which was followed in October by the Citytv.com video app. That app hit the number one spot in iTunes Canada in less than 24 hours.
