William Shatner is 80

The actor best known for his role as Captain James Tiberius Kirk is, for once, not happy about entering a new dimension.

William Shatner, who turned 80 on Tuesday, told Britain’s Daily Express last week he was dreading the landmark birthday.

“It’s monstrous,” he said. “‘Horrible’ and ‘terrible’ fall short of describing it.”

The Montreal-born star got his big break in 1966 when he was cast as Captain Kirk on the Star Trek television series. The show ended after only three seasons, but the movies that followed garnered many loyal fans – Trekkies – who attend themed conventions to this day.

Despite being so universally associated with that character, Shatner has had a long and full acting career, more recently as a lawyer on Boston Legal, as a guest host on Saturday Night Live and as a pitchman for Priceline.com.

He lives in Southern California with his wife of 10 years, Elizabeth, and has three daughters from his first marriage with Gloria Rand.
