Obama offers condolences after deadly Jerusalem blast

The U.S. will continue to stand beside Israel, President Barack Obama told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu the day after a fatal explosion rocked Jerusalem.

Wednesday’s blast at the country’s central bus station killed a 59-year-old British woman and injured dozens of other people, including five Americans.

The bomb was hidden inside a suitcase. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Obama offered his condolences in a telephone call on Thursday and also expressed concern about recent rocket and mortar attacks against Israel from Gaza. The White House says Netanyahu pledged to update the U.S. on the investigation. The bombing was the first major attack by Palestinian militants in the city in several years, Israeli officials said.
