Violent panhandler sentenced to life in prison

TORONTO, Ont. – A Toronto panhandler who fatally stabbed a 32-year-old St. Catharines man who refused to give her money has been sentenced to life in prison with no chance of parole for 12 years.

Nicole Kish fatally stabbed Ross Hammond following an altercation on Queen Street West in 2007. Hammond, who worked as an Internet marketer, was visiting the bars along Queen St. near Bathurst when he ran into Kish.

The young woman requested Hammond give her money, and after he refused, a dispute ensued that left Hammond with four fatal stab wounds to the chest.

Hammond’s family members and supporters filled the Toronto courtroom for Kish’s sentencing Monday morning, which turned out to be an emotional event for many present at the courtroom.

The court heard tearful victim impact statements from a variety of Hammond’s relatives Monday, before Kish was sentenced.

Nicole Kish was found guilty of second-degree murder last month. Three other attackers have already served time and have been deported to the United States.
