Long road ahead: Toronto gears up for construction season

Toronto is gearing up for another busy season of construction: The city will be spending more than $130 million to repair our roads.

Drivers, as expected, are less than pleased.

“It’s a pain in the you-know-what,” driver Oscar Mesa told CityNews on Monday.

“I drive all over and it gets tiresome after a while,” he added.

“We sympathize with motorists as they travel the city, but I can’t stress this enough, this work is absolutely essential,” Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong said at a construction site. Minnan-Wong is also the Chair of the city’s Public Works and Infrastructure Committee.

That $130 million will go to the following projects:

  • Dundas St. from Dovercourt Rd. to Howard Park Ave.
  • Victoria Park Ave. from Hwy. 401 to Finch Ave.
  • Humber College Blvd. from Hwy. 27 to Carrier Drive
  • Dufferin St. from Rogers Rd. to Eglinton Ave.
  • Finch Ave. from Yonge St. to Bayview Ave.

The city will spend an additional $80 million on other work, “including roadwork in conjunction with water-main and sewer replacement and other public realm initiatives,” a City of Toronto press release stated.

The city also continues to fill potholes, having filled 73,000 already this year and on average 237,000 a year for the past three years.

In addition to roadwork, many special events will be held on Toronto streets this summer and are expected to hinder traffic flow. Regular events include the Pride Parade, the Beaches Jazz Festival, the Honda Indy and the Caribana Festival.

The City of Toronto website has a list of the city’s roads that are under construction, or in use for special events such as street festivals.
