BRAMPTON, On. – A 14-year-old has been arrested and charged after a student was stabbed at Judith Nyman Secondary School on Williams Parkway at Bramalea Road in Brampton, Wednesday morning.
The teen is facing several charges including assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.
Police said the call came in around 10 a.m., after the male student was stabbed in the hallway.
The victim – a grade 11 student – was conscious and breathing when rushed to hospital by ambulance, and suffered non-life threatening injuries.
Investigators said the stabbing took place during an altercation between the victim and the suspect.
The school was in lockdown while tactical officers were on the scene, searching for suspects, but it ended after approximately an hour and a half.
“In these types of situations when a lockdown is lifted, we are assured by police that we’re able to continue with our regular school routines at the school, so it’s business as usual at the school,” Carla Pereira of the Peel District School Board told 680News.
Pereira said guidance counsellors, teachers and other support staff were on hand to assist students who may have suffered anxiety due to the incident.
The police used social media sites like Twitter to update parents on the situation. Pereira advised parents to “make sure that they’ve signed up to receive updates from the Peel board website and from their schools websites so that they’re kept up to date.”
Police say the name of the teen has not been released due to the Young Offenders Act.
Anyone who witnessed the incident is being asked to contact police.
