Ajax teacher accused of trying to kill wife in Jamaica granted bail

An Ajax elementary school teacher accused of trying to kill his wife during their Jamaican vacation has been released on bail.

According to The Jamaica Gleaner, Paul Martin, 43, was granted bail Tuesday and released from jail on a $5,000 surety. He taught Grades 5 and 6 at St. Francis de Sales school in Ajax and is also the brother of well-known Victoria-area MP Dr. Keith Martin.

During the bail hearing, a Jamaican judge ordered that Martin must hand over his passport, report to police every day and stay at least 183 metres from his wife, Cathy-Lee Martin.

Martin is charged with attempted murder in a Dec. 23 attack on his wife. Cathy-Lee Martin has testified her husband drove the pair to a secluded location, slit her throat twice before choking her and leaving her for dead.

She was rescued by a passing motorist.

Cathy-Lee Martin has said that during the attack, her husband accused her of having an affair — a charge she denies.

Martin maintains a carjacker attacked his wife. He is due back in court June 15.
