Final jailed G20 suspect released on bail Wednesday

The final person remaining jailed on G20-related charges was released on bail Wednesday, after spending nearly a year behind bars.

Byron Sonne, 38, an Internet security expert, is charged with possessing explosive substances and counselling the commission of mischief not committed for his alleged activities leading up to last summer’s G20 summit.

Sonne, who has been denied bail on two previous occasions, was ordered released on a $250,000 bail bond into his parent’s custody with a number of strict conditions.

He is not to return to his former matrimonial home or have any contact with his ex-wife. They split while Sonne was in jail.

A personal computer will be subject to searches, as will his parent’s Brampton home. He is forbidden from using a cell phone or social networking sites.

Sonne is also banned from possessing explosive substances or contacting members of designated anarchist groups.

“Eleven months has been a very long time, a very difficult time, I mean the loss of my freedom, suffering the loss of people very close to me and dear that I wish I could be with,” he said Wednesday.

He was arrested last June 22, just two days before the opening of the G20 summit, outside his Forest Hill home. Police say Sonne was tracking G20 security measures and had used social media to encourage people to interfere with the security apparatus.

He also allegedly had obtained ingredients to make triacetone triperoxide, the same explosive used famously by “shoe bomber” Richard Reid. Police say he was planning to detonate a homemade explosive downtown.

Sonne’s friends always maintained he is a non-violent person, but fiercely critical of the summit’s security measures.

His wife was also arrested, but quickly released with all charges dismissed.

Sonne’s trial is slated to begin Nov. 7.

“All this stuff will come out in the wash, I’m looking forward to my trial,” he said.  “I’m sure i’ll be exonerated and everything will turn out for the best.”
