Police to Varaschin killer: We will find you

Ontario Provincial Police are sending a blunt message to the man who killed a 42-year-old Orangeville nurse last August.
Const. Peter Leon says DNA evidence collected in the Sonia Varaschin murder case belongs to her killer and that it is only a matter of time before the killer is identified.
“The message we are here to project is to the killer and the message is very simple, we have your DNA and it’s only a matter of time until we find out who you are,” said Const. Leon at a news conference in Orangeville, Wednesday.
Investigators are hoping to narrow the list of suspects by collecting voluntary DNA samples from men who either knew Varaschin or came in contact with her before she died.
Leon is not saying exactly how many men will be asked to provide a cheek swab in this latest phase of their investigation.
DNA serves a dual purpose. It could find the killer and eliminate other suspects.
Police say while the DNA cheek swabs are voluntary, any man who refuses will raise suspicion and become part of the investigation.
“If they refuse there has to be a reason for them refusing,” Const. Leon said.
Graeme Norton of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association has called what police are doing “coercive” and potentially confusing to people.
“This is being presented as something that they more or less have to participate in, and if they don’t they’re going to be looked at as a murderer or a murder suspect,” he told 680News.
The CCLA has sent a letter to the OPP calling for an immediate stop to the DNA collection.
Sonia Varaschin was reported missing on August 30, 2010 when she failed to show up for work.
Blood was found throughout her Orangeville home as well as in her car, which was parked nearby.
Her body was found dumped in a wooded area in Caledon, about 12-kilometres from Orangeville.
Police have previously said the killer wore a men’s size 10 or 11 Wind River or Dakota brand name boot sold only at Mark’s Work Wearhouse.
