Teen pleads guilty to charges in fatal Brampton crash

A man charged with various alcohol-related offenses after a fatal Brampton crash pleaded guilty in court Wednesday.

Brian Turner, 19, pleaded guilty to impaired driving causing death, as well as impaired driving causing bodily harm and taking a vehicle without permission, in the death of Sivanermaikkarasi Parameswaran.

Parameswaran, 41, died following a two-vehicle collision on December 22, 2010.  She and her husband were out delivering newspapers when, police say, a silver Ford Focus collided with the couple’s silver Honda Civic.

“I spend most of the day missing my wife,” Vijay Parameswaran told the court in a victim impact statement.

“My daughter is suffering a great deal. My son still calls out ‘Mom’ and then realizes she is not there,” he added.

Turner’s parents told the court their son had repeatedly stolen the car, and had tried to stop him by hiding the keys and removing him from their insurance. Turner said he was “sorry and ashamed” of his actions.

“The family, obviously, is very torn apart over this and two children are without their mother,” Parameswaran’s lawyer Joseph Raimondo said outside of court.

“It’s been a very difficult day, but they’re going to try to pick up the pieces,” he added.

The Crown has asked for a three-year jail sentence and a 10-year ban on driving. The defense is arguing for a two-year sentence. The sentencing hearing will begin on June 22.

A trust fund has been set up for the victims’ family. To make a donation, go to any Scotiabank branch in the GTA or Hamilton and deposit to account number 939 22020 8086.
