Nintendo launches new controller at E3

LOS ANGELES – On the first day of the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3), one of the the most highly anticipated announcements was expected to be made by powerhouse gaming corportation Nintendo; however, some people left the press conference with more questions than answers.

It had been rumoured that Nintendo would release the new console, nicknamed “Project Cafe,” that would be the successor to their highly successful Wii gaming system.

After showing off new games for their popular portable 3 dimension gaming device the 3DS – announced at E3 2010, Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata took to the stage.

Iwata told the audience that the new console was going to be more about “you,” the gamer, and so it would be called the Wii U.  But, that was where the information about the console ended. No specs for the system were announced and even an image of what Nintendo fans could expect from the Wii U was not shown.  A short video presented showed dramatic graphical improvement which lead most to believe the new system would be in HD.

President and CEO of Nintendo American, Reggie Fils-Aime, did present was a revolutionary new handheld, tablet-style controller for the Wii U.

The controller contains a 6.2-inch touchscreen and can be used as a motion censored controller when connected to a television.

Users will now be able to play a game on their television, pause it, and then continue it on their high definition, wireless, game controller within the perimeters of the console.  Iwata made it known the new controller was not a portable gaming system, but an extension of the Wii U system that would give perspective to the user.

“It will let everyone see games in a different way,” Iwata announced.

No price was given for either the new system or the controller but it is expected to be on shelves in 2012.
