Merger of TSE and LSE gets backing of top financial execs

The merger of the Toronto and London Stock Exchanges is getting the backing of a group of top financial services executives.

The group, including former TSX chief executive Rowland Fleming said the merger protects Canadian regulatory sovereignty and maintains competition and a level playing field.

The executives are opposing a bid for the TSX by the Maple Consortium of some of Canada’s biggest pension funds, banks and financial players.

They said that would create a monopoly that controls nearly 90 per cent of all equities trading in Canada.
